SPRINT showcased at Kokkola Material Week 2025

Nov 26, 2025

The Horizon Europe SPRINT project was proudly presented by our partner, the Research Unit of Sustainable Chemistry at the University of Oulu, during Kokkola Material Week, held from 10 to 14 November 2025 in Finland.

Kokkola Material Week is an international event that brings together companies, researchers, decision-makers, and innovators to explore the latest developments in the chemical, bioeconomy, and mineral sectors. This year’s edition provided an excellent platform to highlight SPRINT’s ambition: revolutionizing stationary energy storage through cost-effective and sustainable sodium-ion batteries.

Why SPRINT matters

SPRINT is developing two safe, quasi-solid-state sodium-ion battery prototypes optimized for stationary applications. These batteries will:

  • Use abundant, non-toxic materials sourced from EU supply chains
  • Integrate innovative NaFePO₄ cathodes, hard-carbon anodes, and quasi-solid polymer electrolytes
  • Scale up dry electrode processing to enhance sustainability

By reducing costs, improving energy density and power metrics, and ensuring safe operation, SPRINT aims to pave the way for high market penetration and support Europe’s clean energy transition.

Next steps

Demonstrations will take place in Austria and Lithuania, and additional contexts such as Africa and India will be studied to assess global applicability.

We thank the University of Oulu for representing SPRINT at this prestigious event and look forward to sharing more updates as the project progresses!
