In January 2026, the SPRINT (Sustainable European sodium-ion batteries for stationary applications featuring improved PRocesses, Inherently safe and Non-Toxic materials) Horizon Europe project celebrated its first anniversary.
On that occasion, the 18 partners from different corners of Europe convened to the project’s 3rd Consortium Meeting, hosted by TNO on the premises of their Holst Centre at the ‘High Tech Campus’ in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
The SPRINT project aims to rethink battery technology in Europe. Its main objective is to deliver safe, sustainable and cost-effective alternative to store energy by developing sodium-ion batteries. SPRINT focuses on building batteries that are affordable, eco-friendly and leak-free, and promotes new local materials such as residues from Northern European forests as well as non-toxic chemical substances.

During the meeting, partners assessed the progress already achieved and ongoing advancements. Partners equally discussed the next steps regarding the successful achievement of the upcoming milestones and concrete deliverables.
The consortium partners also participated in two hands-on workshops. The first provided the partners with a deeper instruction on sodium battery materials and processes that are pertinent to the project’s objectives. The second focused on project exploitation, analysing strategies for future deployment and ways to expand the Exploitation Board.

The brainstorming sessions and open discussions reinforced the consortium’s shared commitment to advancing sustainable, industrial-scale sodium-ion battery solutions through close collaboration and exchange of expertise.
We are grateful to TNO for hosting our anniversary Consortium Meeting, as well as to all consortium members for their dedication to driving SPRINT forward. After one successful year, the innovation journey continues strongly!
